I get asked quite often what is the best camera for filming tennis. Here’s what I think, but first…….maybe the best camera is simply your smartphone. What you say! What if I get a call?? Hey, dude! You’re playing tennis and your phone should be on mute anyway, right? Might as well put it to work. Battery life is good and the cameras are outstanding. IPhones, in particular the 11 and up ones, have a built in wide-angle lens.
BUT, if you can’t use your phone, the next best bet is one of the action cameras in conjunction with an external battery. Many customers use some version of the GoPro, but some or the Chinese knock-offs work well too. The Akaso EK 7000 has been known to work well and is less expensive than the GoPro. Almost any external battery with 5000 mAh or more will power your camera for far longer than any tennis match. Just don’t let the battery hang from it’s usb cable and stress out the USB port on the camera. If that breaks, your camera is dead. Either get a battery with a pouch to hang on the knobs, or wrap the usb cable around the QM-1 several times.
I hope that helps, but don’t hesitate to comment or contact us for any specific questions you might have.
My experience is that Phone and GoPro are poor choice for tennis recording.
Typical tennis match requires around 60mins in the sun. These devices heat up significantly after 30mins and they stopped or shutdown.
Hey Dave! Thanks for your comment. You are right about devices overheating after 30+ minutes. For that exact reason, we have started selling the QM-1+ Shade Cover! Keeps your devices cooler and can shade from almost any angle! Check it out here: QM-1+
