Is 10 and Under Junior Tennis Working?

Just finished watching my first tournament with 10 and under juniors on a smaller court.  Wow, I was blown away by the skill level and maturity of the young warriors!  Strokes were looking great, and there was literally no arguing or any bad calls that I could see.  Players were generous to a fault – I think they just didn’t want the rallies to end!   They wanted to hit another ball!   Winning was NOT the primary goal.

There is still a lot of controversy over the whole program.  Wayne Bryan (father of the “Bryan Brothers”) says that the program should end at six years old.  In his own words “The USTA has built a half-mile bridge over a 1-mile river,” Bryan wrote. “Jump street is age 6, not 10. Ten is too late.”

I can’t debate with Wayne Bryan, but I did see some kids having a lot of fun!   Here’s a video that I took of some youngsters having at it (best seen in full screen):
