Tennis Recording – Camera Height

How is the quality and usefulness of the video affected by the height of the camera? Some mounts, like maybe a gorilla pod, don’t necessarily get the camera to the top of the fence. Should you consider this in your purchase of a camera mount for tennis? We think so, but take a look for yourself. Following are some examples of how the height of the mounted camera affects what you see.

Note that it matters how far the fence is from the baseline as to how it affects the camera height. The further the setback the higher you want your camera. Most tennis courts have either 18′ or 21′ setbacks.

Camera Heights 9' Camera Heights 10' running Camera Heights 12' serving Camera Heights 14' with title

In these examples here, the baseline-fence setback is 21′.  We mounted the camera (a Kodak Zx3 with a wide angle lens attachment) at different heights.  The higher the camera, the better the vertical angle, giving a better sense of overall movement.   The camera mounted at 9 is okay, but it doesn’t quite give the spatial sense. Back and forth (or horizontal) movement is okay, but you aren’t really seeing the up and back (“vertical”) movement as well. As the camera gets a little higher, at 10′ above the ground, you start to get some more sense of the vertical movement. As you can see, the higher up you are the better the sense of vertical movement.

In our opinion a minimum of 10′ is necessary, while the ability to go to 12′ high, especially if your court has a  21′ setback, is worth the minimal expense of the ProView Extender .  To see the whole video example from where these pictures were extracted,  Click Here
